The New Zealand Landscapes
Awe inspiring - Life changing - this
was Vanessa's description of her first visit to New Zealand's
South Island. Travelling from Christchurch to Wanaka the sheer
scale and unspoilt grandeur of the landscape prepared her somewhat
for the dynamic strength and sparkling colour of the Wanaka mountains,
lakes, and surrounds. Here Vanessa began a series of paintings
which have since been completed at her home studio. click

Herefordshire artist Vanessa Pomeroy plans a creative
venture in New Zealand
Vanessa Pomeroy, painter and sculptor
trained in Fine art at Newcastle University, and subsequently
at the University of Bologna having won an Italian government
postgraduate scholarship. She has exhibited widely, nationally,
in London, and in Italy, and in Herefordshire. Her much sought
after work is in private collections nationally, and in the United
States.
Landscape
Paintings of broad panoramas are a celebration of vital colour,
dynamic sculptural perspective, and carefully considered design.
Her paintings range from well considered compositions expressing
poise and stature, to dramatic passionate scenes, employing vibrant
light and colour.
Her most recent paintings, fuse dark
storm clouds with bright light driving down on the black mountain
range. This border country of Herefordshire has been Vanessa's
chosen subject for paintings emphasizing expansive space and the
changing atmosphere of this dramatic area. This subject matter
has acted as a catalyst for Vanessa, in her desire to travel to
the South Island of New Zealand, in search of a wider and even
more mountainous landscape.
Having seen only photographs of New Zealand,
she became particularly attracted with an image of Wanaka lake
and mountains, and felt specifically drawn to that region.
Later that month while exhibiting as
an independent artist within the Hay Festival, she met a trustee
of the 'Festival of Colour,' an arts festival centred in
Wanaka itself. Subsequently the director of the Autumn Art
school, an associate of the festival, engaged Vanessa to teach
within the school for a period and exhibit a selection of her
paintings, while there. She will set off on this creative venture
in April '07. Having had a vast background in teaching and
lecturing in the field of Fine art, including lecturing in Italy
with the UCLA, this will be a stimulating teaching experience.
Vanessa will be taking her students out to what will be for her
the new landscape territory of Wanaka's lakes and mountains.
This week will form the centre of
a four week period of research, drawing, and painting the dramatic
landscape on the South Island.
Small paintings will be finished on the
spot, but larger work will be worked on in the studio on her return.
A solo exhibition is planned in '08
to show the completed work, entitled 'mountain ranges,' and will
include the work from the New Zealand period as well as work from
the black mountains showing both the similarities and diversities
of these incredible landscapes.
